For millions of people across South Africa, a smartphone is more than a device. It’s how you work, navigate, communicate, get paid, and access opportunities every single day.
For gig workers in particular, having a reliable phone is essential. Whether you’re driving for Uber or Bolt, managing deliveries, or working independently, your phone is often the center of your business.
But getting access to quality technology hasn’t always been simple.
Traditional financing can involve paperwork, long approvals, and systems that don’t reflect the realities of how many people actually earn and manage money.
That’s why we’re excited to announce a new partnership between Kasi Money and BitMobile designed specifically to change that.
Together, we’re bringing BitMobile’s Phēnix X to gig workers across South Africa through Kasi Money’s flexible payment model built around the hustle economy.
A Smartphone Built for the Hustle
Phēnix X was designed to be more than just another smartphone. It was built as a practical, everyday working tool for people who rely on their device to earn income.
For drivers spending long hours on the road, reliability matters. Speed matters. Security matters. Phēnix X was built with those everyday realities in mind.
The Phēnix X also includes what we call the RISE experience: Rewards, Integrated Content, Security, and Education. Designed to make the device more valuable beyond day-to-day communication.
Users can access monthly utility rewards through the Phēnix Portal, explore integrated tools and content built for digital participation, and benefit from biometric security features like fingerprint and facial unlock that help protect personal data and accounts. The platform is also designed to support ongoing digital education and accessibility, helping users navigate an increasingly connected economy with greater confidence and control.
Flexible Payments That Make Sense
Through the Kasi Money platform, eligible Professional plan users with a history of banking in the app can now qualify for a Phēnix X with a simple, accessible repayment structure.
Users start with a R1,000 deposit, then choose a repayment plan that fits their income flow
- 3-month plan
- 6-month plan
- 9-month plan
The best part? Every option costs the same total amount: R5,199. Users simply choose the pace that works best for them.
Built Around How Gig Workers Actually Earn
One of the biggest challenges for independent workers is that most financial systems weren’t designed for variable income.
Gig workers often earn weekly, not monthly. Income fluctuates, and flexibility matters.
This partnership changes the experience by allowing repayments to come directly from Kasi payouts, creating a model that aligns more naturally with how drivers already manage their finances.
Instead of forcing people to adapt to outdated systems, the technology and payment structure adapt to them.

A Shared Vision for Access
At the heart of this partnership is a shared belief that access to technology should feel empowering, not complicated.
“This partnership is about meeting people where they are and building technology around the realities of how they work and earn. Together with Kasi Money, we’re making it easier for South African gig workers to access a smartphone designed not just for communication, but for opportunity, security, and participation in the digital economy,” said Brian Maw, CEO of BitMobile.
That mission is shared by the Kasi Money team as well.
“This partnership with BitMobile is about helping gig workers access technology that can power their livelihood. By connecting repayments directly to Kasi payouts, we’re making smartphone ownership more accessible, flexible, and aligned with the realities of South Africa’s growing gig economy,” said Thami Hoza, Co-Founder of Kasi Money.
How to Get Started
Getting started is designed to be fast and simple.
Step 1: Sign Up
Eligible users can sign up through the Kasi Money platform, choose a payment plan, and accept the terms.
Step 2: Pay the Deposit
A R1,000 deposit is collected from the user’s Kasi balance or next payout. Devices ship once the deposit has been received.
Step 3: Device Delivery
Once the deposit is complete, BitMobile ships the Phēnix X directly to the user’s address, typically within 7 working days.
Step 4: Pay as You Earn
Remaining installments are automatically collected from Kasi payouts until the device is fully paid off.
What This Means Going Forward
This partnership is part of a larger shift toward building technology ecosystems that are practical, inclusive, and designed around real-world use cases, especially in emerging markets where mobile access can directly impact someone’s ability to earn and grow.
